Backyard Treehouses & Playhouse Construction in West Columbia, SC
Most backyard play structures come out of a box — sized for an average yard, built to fit a shipping pallet, and designed to be assembled in a weekend by whoever's willing to read the instructions. That's fine for some families. But if you're picturing something that actually fits your yard, holds up to years of real use, and feels like it was built for your kids specifically — the kind of place that turns an ordinary afternoon into a fort, a clubhouse or a lookout tower, depending on what the day calls for — this is that service.
A built-on-site alternative to a prefab playset.
This covers ground-level playhouses, lower play structures and family-focused builds, with or without a tree. You don't need a big, mature oak in your backyard to give your kids somewhere real to disappear into until the streetlights come on. Instead of a kit designed to work in any yard, we design around your actual yard — its slope, its space, and whatever trees you do or don't have.
Prefab playsets aren't built poorly on purpose. They're built to a price point and a standard size, which means compromises: thinner lumber, hardware that loosens over time, and a layout that doesn't account for your yard's actual shape. A custom-built structure doesn't have those constraints, because it's built once, for your space specifically.

This is probably your service if…
Your kids have outgrown (or are about to outgrow) a smaller playset, and you want something that'll last through more than one age range.
You don't have a tree suited for a true elevated treehouse, but still want a real play structure — not a plastic kit.
An existing structure — store-bought or a past DIY project — feels wobbly, worn, or like something you wouldn't want a group of kids roughhousing on.
Your yard has a slope, tight space, or layout that a standard prefab kit doesn't fit well.
You want specific features — a slide, a climbing element, shade, a particular size or layout — that aren't available as a standard kit option.
Five things a custom build
does that a kit can’t.
Built on site, around your yard’s real shape and your kids’ real ages — not flat-packed to fit a shipping pallet.

Ground-level playhouses
Ground-level and low-elevation play structures — no mature tree required.

Custom layouts for irregular yards
Sloped lots, tight spaces, or yards where a standard rectangular kit just doesn't fit.

Durable materials
Construction built for years of active outdoor use, not a single season.

Age-appropriate design
What makes sense for a toddler is different from what makes sense for a group of 8- and 9-year-olds, and the design should reflect that.

Add-on features
Discussed during planning where they make sense for your space and budget, rather than limited to a fixed kit list.

A prefab kit is built to a price point and a standard size. A custom structure doesn’t carry those compromises.
You don't need a big, mature oak to get a real, well-built play space for your kids.

A conversation about your kids and your yard
We ask about ages, how the space will actually be used, and what you're picturing — this shapes the design more than anything else.
A site visit
We look at your yard in person — slope, space, any trees you're considering — so the design fits what you actually have, not a generic layout.
Construction
We construct on-site, using materials and joinery built for years of outdoor use and active play, not a shipping-flat kit. Most projects take several weeks to complete — this isn't a weekend assembly job; it's something built to survive years of jumping, climbing and whatever games get invented along the way.
Walkthrough
We walk the structure with you — railings, footing and any features — so you know exactly what your kids are getting, and what they'll be climbing into all summer.

Built around your yard and your kids — not assembled from a box.
You get a say in the layout, the features and how it's sized for your children's ages, instead of picking the closest match from a catalog. Rob Patterson is hands-on with these builds directly, so the person who visited your yard is the same person building it.
Guardrails and access points are sized to the height of the specific platform, not a one-size-fits-all default — a low platform for a toddler and a taller structure for older kids don't call for the same setup, and we'll talk through what makes sense during planning.

No. This service covers ground-level and lower play structures that don't depend on a mature tree. If you do have a good tree and want a true elevated treehouse instead, that's covered under our Installation & Contractor Services.
A well-built custom structure uses sturdier materials and construction than a mass-produced kit, and because it's built for your yard specifically, it doesn't have to compromise on footing or layout to fit a standard size. That said, no play structure is risk-free; supervision and age-appropriate use still matter regardless of who builds it.
That's part of why we ask about ages and how the space will be used before designing anything — a structure planned around a wider age range, or designed to be added onto later, holds up better over time than a kit sized for one specific stage.
Most of what falls under this service is ground-level or sits just a short step up. If your design does include a raised platform, we size it appropriately for your kids' ages — well below the 8 to 10 feet typical of our elevated treehouse builds.
Where it makes sense for your space and the structure's design, yes. Features like these are part of the planning conversation rather than a fixed list.
Most projects take several weeks, not days. We build for years of hard play, which takes more time than a prefab kit assembled in an afternoon.
Pricing starts at $5,000. The final number depends on size, features and materials. We'll give you a specific quote after seeing your yard and hearing what you're picturing.
We'll go over what to expect based on the materials used for your specific build during the walkthrough, so you know what upkeep looks like going forward.
Yes. That's one of the main advantages of a custom build over a prefab kit, which is generally sized for a flat, average yard.
